Dumping bulky garbage? Tenants pay the bill!
A bulky waste site at the housing complex seems like a good idea. It saves students a lot of time and effort. If a tenant has any waste, they won’t have to go to the waste site on the other side of the city. This is especially convenient when you are moving.
Such a waste site has been present at the DUWO-complex on the Oppaallaan in Hoofddorp for several years. Unfortunately, this seems to cause various undesirable side-effects.
For example, although the waste site is only meant for the people living on campus, people from around the neighbourhood have started using it as well. The majority of the waste is currently coming from outside of the campus. Especially handyman businesses, but also individuals, often use the waste site to dump old furniture and construction waste.
Although they are normally required to pay €70 per cubic meter of bulky waste, they are currently dumping it at the student campus for free. Who are paying for this!
This is very bothersome for the students currently living at the Opaallaan. The price for transporting the waste is included in their rent. And this is no small number: for just the past year a total of €23.000 of waste was transported. This comes down to €40 (!) a student.
Next to the fact that the tenants pay for waste that is not theirs, it also looks very messy, as illustrated by the picture above.
At the request of Duwoners, DUWO will take steps to address this illegal waste dumping. They are currently considering a solution where the waste site remains accessible for the people living on campus, but will restrict outsiders from dumping their waste there. Duwoners hopes to reach a conclusion as soon as possible and will monitor the situation in the meantime.
