Since 2014, the student complex the Feniks in Amsterdam East has been occupied by approximately 342 international, national and PhD students in independent rooms spread over ten floors. The Feniks is located in the Watergraafsmeer district surrounded by plenty of greenery and cosiness. For example, the Frankendael park is a few minutes’ walk from the student complex, but also shopping streets Middenweg and Wibautstraat with many shops and cafes. In addition, the centre of Amsterdam can be reached within ten minutes by bike. Also, the Amsterdam Amstel station is a few minutes’ walk from the Feniks, where you can catch the train, tram, bus and metro.

The residents’ committee of the Feniks are committed to help all residents of the student complex the Feniks. This is done through regular contact with various organizations to create a pleasant and sociable living environment for everyone. For advice or possible solutions to problems that the residents encounter in the student complex, there is not only contact with the landlord DUWO, but also with various neighbourhood organizations of Watergraafsmeer, the municipality of Amsterdam and the tenants’ organization Duwoners. Herein, the residents’ committee tries to focus on possible solutions for both the short and the long term to prevent recurrence. Further, where necessary for the student complex, the residents’ committee participates in (informational) meetings to actively contribute to an enjoyable living environment in the neighbourhood.

Beside all the formal activities, the residents’ committee also organizes social activities for the residents of the Feniks, so that the residents can get to know each other, but also the neighbourhood a little better in a relaxed atmosphere. For this purpose, there is not only contact with the tenants’ organization Duwoners, but also with various organizations in and around the Watergraafsmeer district.

On the other hand, the residents’ committee also makes an effort to be able to reach all residents of the student complex and vice versa digitally through social media. That is why several Facebook pages have been created, including the general page of the Feniks, but also an Instagram account. Along with that a Google group is created to promote direct contact and discussion with each other.

The Elsevier building on the Krelis Louwenstraat in Amsterdam, which was redeveloped into student accommodation in 2015, is available for rent. The 244 new student residences, all with an affordable rent from 350 euros inclusive, have been rented to students since mid-July 2015. There are independent studios and two-bedroom apartments (for cohabitants).

The Vosmaerstraat residents association was founded in March 1982. Before, there had been many problems with the quality of the building (for a long time it was supposed to get demolished). This residents association functions as a residents committee: it stands up for the tenants in the building, coordinates common tasks and communicates with the landlord about matters that concern the building. The DUWO housing association has owned the property since 2004. The complex consists of residential groups and is not intended for student housing.

The first residents entered the Science Park II complex at the end of 2013. Students from the UvA and HvA, among others, live there. With both a large number of domestic and foreign students, this makes it a vibrant place to live. The UvA, Amsterdam University College, the Universum Sports Centre and various research institutes are just steps away from Science Park II. With its own station, lots of greenery and Javaplein 10 minutes away, it is a popular residential location. At the moment there is no active residents committee (RC).

There are several tasks that the RC takes care of, but bringing together the residents of Science Park II is the core activity. This happens among other things by organizing all kinds of events, such as BBQs, theme parties, pub quizzes, skating together or pool evenings.

In addition, the RC also form a point of contact for residents. Is everyone confronted with the same problems and does DUWO not solve this adequately? Then the RC stands up for the interests of our residents and proposes solutions where possible. The RC also consults with the social manager of the building and strives to increase the liveability of the apartments.

We, the residents committee of the Spinoza campus, are committed to all residents of the Spinoza campus on the Dennenrodepad and the Darlingstraat. The Spinoza campus is located in Amsterdam-Zuidoost on the border between Diemen and the Bijlmer. The approximately 1250 residences of more than 20 square meters on our campus are divided into 15 modular blocks and all have their own kitchen and bathroom. The residents’ committee regularly meets with the landlord DUWO and the municipality about problems encountered by residents and about suggestions to make the campus more pleasant. For example, we put forward suggestions for better protection of the homes that were ultimately implemented: there were hardly any burglaries after this. We also visit information meetings in the neighborhood on topics that are relevant to the campus and we have regular contact with tenants’ organization Duwoners about our activities.

We have also made a welcome booklet that shows new residents the way in the neighborhood and points out a number of things in their home. For relocations, a parking permit can be requested from us with which a car can be driven to the entrances of all blocks. Of course we also try to bring residents in contact with each other. That is why we manage a private Facebook page and we have set up an activity committee that regularly organizes activities for residents and manages the common space on campus.
